Post Re: Gewehr 98
Hmmmm, please note that the original Gew98 fired a round-nosed bullet with a diameter of 8.08mm/0.318".

In 1905, the bullet design was changed to a pointed nose, or, in German, 'Spitzgeschoss', with a diameter of 8.2mm/0.323".

ALL guns that were converted to shoot the new design bullet were stamped with a large letter S on the barrel and on the receiver adjacent to the barrel. The rear sight was also changed to suit the flatter trajectory of the new bullet.

99% of ALL modern made 8mm Mauser - actually still called 7.92x57 - is of the larger diameter bullet. Trying to shoot this in an unchanged/unaltered [for some reason] Gew98 Mauser rifle will result in disaster. I bleeve that Sellier & Bellot still make the smaller diameter round, but I've never seen it here in yUK.
