This is an original MkI Enfield Lock Arsenal-made Martini-Enfield in .450-577cal. It has a degree of sun-burn on the blueing which may indicate that it spent some time in hot climes - perhaps Africa. As such, it may have been at Rorkes Drift in 1879 - who can tell?

The load is a BP substitute called Triple 7, and is fairly stout.

For anybody interested in the reloading element of this cartridge, it's VERY cheap, considering the size of the cartridge.

1. Proper bullets are less than 20eu per hundred.

2. The cases - if you are only shooting them in one M-E, simply need neck-resizing. The cases I'm using in the movie have been re-used about twenty times so far.

3. The BP substitute propellant in this case [Triple 7 or RSC/Ctg] is around eu44 per pound - it's American, hence the use of imperial weights. The load here was 65gr and there are 7000gr in a pound. So that's 107 reloads from the pound of propellant @ 41c per load.

41c + 20c + 3c [the primer] = 62c per round.

If you used a nitro load of about 35gr of H4198 then it's even cheaper - 200 reloads from a pound of powder = 20c + 20c + 3c = 43c..........

I've ignored the cost of the cases, their value having effectively 'disappeared' over their lifetime of use. However, for the pedants out there, assuming a reduction in value of 50% every time they are used.....

Purchase cost was say eu2.50 each. Second use - eu1.25. Third use - 60c. Fourth use - 30c. Fifth use - 15c. Sixth use - 8c. Seventh use - 4c. Eighth use - 2c. Ninth use - 1c. Tenth use - free........................
